Jay Paap

Dr. Jay Paap is President of Paap Associates, and is one of Management Roundtable’s most highly rated instructors.  He serves on the Executive Education faculty of the MIT Sloan School and has taught in executive programs for the Industrial Relations Center (Caltech), the Haas School (Berkeley), and a wide variety of professional and commercial executive workshops globally. He is a Fellow of The Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) and a PDMA Certified New Product Development Professional. Jay received his Ph.D. from MIT’s Sloan School of Management with concentrations in technology management and organization change.

Jay has over forty-five years experience in innovation and technology management, including consulting and speaking assignments with over 350 firms in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific Rim. His clients include both government and commercial firms from such diverse industries as automotive, computers, electronics, energy, food processing, biotech, pharmaceuticals, oil, telecommunications, consumer products, aerospace, chemicals, defense, and various government agencies and Federal Labs.

Jay received the Maurice Holland Award from the Industrial Research Institute (IRI) for the best article published in Research Technology Management: Anticipating Disruptive Innovation. The CEB (Corporate Executive Board) selected the Timken roadmapping process as a best practice. Their writeup Timken’s Goal Validation Roadmaps cites Jay’s CFTP Landscaping Mapping process as one of the key building blocks of the Timken approach.

Anticipating Disruptive Innovation (Maurice Holland Award Winner) – An overview of the “Dynamics of Innovation” model outlining the three situations in which technology substitution occur. Disruptions, it is argued, occur not by technology change but by firms ignoring shifts in customer needs and other drivers. Published in ‘Research Technology Management’, September 2004.

John Carter

John Carter has been a CEO, founder and inventor. As Principal of TCGen Inc., he has advised technology firms such as Apple, Cisco, Dolby, HP, IBM, and Xerox on strategy and operations. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cirrus Logic (CRUS). John has raised private equity to execute a successful rollup in the Consumer Electronics sector and he has held the positions of CTO and Chief Engineer. John is the co-inventor of the BOSE Noise Cancelling Headphones and shares the original patent with Dr. Bose.

He has been a member of the faculty at Case Western’s Executive program, and an invited speaker at MIT and Stanford University. John has served as an advisor to the International Association of Product Development, the Gordon Institute and The Management Roundtable.

John was the founder and a Principal of Boston-based Product Development Consulting, Inc. (PDC), a leading organization in advising Fortune 500 companies in the areas of research, development and marketing. Before founding PDC, he was Chief Engineer of BOSE Corporation where he managed the development of technologies such as the Acoustic Wave Music System, Wave Radio, Lifestyle Home Theatre, Noise Reduction Headphones and others. He was one of the initial contributors to BOSE’s entry into the automobile OEM business and led the product and business development of BOSE’s noise reduction technology for the military market.

He earned his MS in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a BS in engineering from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA.
